AMD has reported revenue of $1.39 billion for the third quarter of 2009, a decrease of 22% compared to the third quarter of 2008. In the third quarter 2009 revenue increased 18% compared to the second quarter of 2009.

For the quarter, the company reported an operating loss of $77m compared to operating income of $122m for the same period in the prior year.

AMD has reported a net loss of $128m, or $0.18 per share, which includes a net favorable impact of $54m, or $0.08 per share, primarily from a $66m gain from the repurchase of debt. In the third quarter of 2008, the company reported net loss of $134m.

Dirk Meyer, president and CEO of AMD, said: “Strong demand for our product and platform offerings combined with disciplined execution resulted in AMD Product Company achieving profitability in the third quarter.

“Growth in microprocessor and graphics unit shipments drove an 18% sequential revenue increase, while improved factory utilisation rates, higher microprocessor average selling price and an increase in 45nm product shipments resulted in a gross margin improvement from the prior quarter.”

AMD said that it expects its product company revenue to increase modestly for the fourth quarter of 2009.
