Advanced Micro Devices Inc has now chosen a name for its 3D enhancement technology, which adds a set of 21 new instructions to the x86 process architecture to support graphics, in the style of Intel Corp’s MMX technology. AMD has been working with Cyrix and Centaur Technology to support a standard set of 3D graphics instruction-set extensions in order to challenge Intel’s plans for the next generation of its MMX technology. AMD will call the new technology 3Dnow! The new instructions are expected to be supported by Microsoft Direct X and leading 3D game developers.
