Creation of a new US semiconductor company with the gravitas to stand shoulder to shoulder with the likes of Intel Corp and National Semiconductor took a step forward last Friday when the US Justice Department announced that it had no objections to Advanced Micro Devices Inc and Monolithic Memories Inc going ahead with their plan to merge. AMD agreed to pay $440m in shares for Monolithic in May (CI No 673).
