AMD expands Phenom II processor line

Runs at a frequency of 3.4GHz compared to 3.2GHz of X4 955

By CBR Staff Writer

AMD has expanded its Phenom II processor line by launching the new 3.4GHz Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition processor. The company said the new quad core chip has the fastest clock speed compared to any of its chips produced earlier.

The new version of Phenom II processor runs at a slightly higher frequency of 3.4GHz compared to 3.2GHz of Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition processor which was launched in April this year. AMD has enhanced the new CPU’s Thermal Design Power (TDP) to 140 watts to make it compatible on an AM2+ system.

The two CPUs have 8MB cache and are compatible with both DDR2 and DDR3 memory types. Similar to other Phenom II chips, the new processor has the ability to put the idle cores to sleep modes. Apart from that the new version has 16x unlocked multiplier, Socket AM3 and 2GHz Hyper Threading link.

The new version comes with CoolCore technology which can clock-down inactive portions of L3 cache and result in power saving and reduction in heat dissipation. The new CPUs’ Thermal Design Power (TDP) has been improved to 140 watts and it is backward compatible with older Socket AM2+ based motherboards.

The new processor is reportedly available at around $245, the same price as Phenom II X4 955.
