In response to Intel Corp’s Coppermine launch this week, Advanced Micro Devices Inc has cut prices on its chips by up to 18%. The largest cut came on its flagship 700MHz Athlon processor, down from $849 to $699, a drop of 18%. Other Athlon prices where also chopped, making the AMD chips cheaper than the Pentium III processors running at the same clockspeed. The next salvo in the x86 war will come when AMD ramps up the Athlon to 800MHz, a move expected very shortly by industry watchers.
