Advanced Micro Devices Inc chairman and chief exective Jerry Sanders went against perceived wisdom when he predicted further fragmentation in the computer industry with the top 10 computer companies losing market share to those in the all others category – good news for AMD he said, since all others is where Advanced Micro tends to get its business: another prediction is that unit shipments of portables and dockable personal computers will overtake straight desktops by around 1996 or 1997 – to win this business, chip manufacturers will have to build fabrication facilities capable of handling sub 0.5 micron circuits, he said – in a side-swipe at upstart Cyrix Corp, which has fab chips but no fab, relying on Texas Instruments Inc and SGS Thomson Microelectronics BV.
