AMD Opteron 6200 Series processors validate, support Inphi’s LRDIMMs

LRDIMM memory modules will operate on the AMD Opteron 6200 Series platform

By CBR Staff Writer

AMD Opteron 6200 Series processors, formerly code-named "Interlagos" have validated and supported the high-speed analogue semiconductor offerings provider Inphi’s load-reduced dual-inline memory modules (LRDIMMs), enabled by Inphi’s iMB.

The validation reportedly provides assurance to the memory vendors and systems designers that they can populate AMD Opteron 6200 Series-based systems with up to 768GB of memory for enterprise and cloud-based applications in 2P servers.

With AMD Opteron 6200 Series processors, cloud computing and the memory bandwidth are provided with better performance, scalability for virtualisation and improved efficiency.

While with the scalability of the AMD Opteron 6200 Series processors, up to 73% more memory bandwidth is enabled, which would help servers to host more virtual machines.

LRDIMMs replace the register with an isolation memory buffer to reduce the load, enabling servers’ memory to be easily scaled upward, with more and higher-density DRAMs on each module, causing both capacity and speed to be boosted while using the same motherboard real estate as an RDIMM.

Inphi Marketing Computing and Storage vice-president Paul Washkewicz said with the AMD Opteron 6200 Series, AMD has created a platform for the next-generation of cost-efficient servers, for which LRDIMM technology provides the ideal memory-management offering.

"The validation Inphi has achieved through AMD provides the market with assurance that fully populated, high-speed LRDIMM memory modules will operate optimally on the AMD Opteron 6200 Series platform," said Washkewicz.
