Acton, Massachusetts-based Amber Wave Systems Inc will this month start shipping its AmberSwitch (CI No 2,601) with a previously-unannounced feature. Amber Wave says that it has developed a new adaptive cut-through’ switching scheme, which enables users to combine the performance of cut-through switching with the reliability of store-and-forward switching. According to the company, users are able to switch from one form of switching to the other on the fly, and on a per-port basis. The product is said to incorporate a cut-through default setting that automatically switches to store-and-forward when packet errors are detected. When the error rate drops down to a user-configurable threshold, it is then said to return to cut-through mode automatically. The new feature will be included as standard on the AmberSwitch.
