Rumours are ripe that the US retailer Amazon mulling plans to unveil a low-cost mobile phone network. Definite information is yet to be disclosed but ITProPortal reported that Amazon might have interest in emerging as a mobile phone network operator.

Amazon has just launched its website ‘Wireless’ in the US that offers mobile phones and wireless plans. According to media sources, Amazon might focus on two different segments, such as Mobile Network and Contract Mobiles, if the company finally introduces its ‘much talked about’ mobile phone network.

The company is reported to be finalising the launch date of its ebook reader Kindle, in the UK. Amazon is said to be working hard on having Kindle ready for launch before Christmas. The company is believed to have secured agreements with book publishers and is in the process of negotiating with news and magazine publishers, as well.

The retailer is expected to provide its customers with the download option for books through PCs or over Wi-Fi, but also wants to retain the option of regular download via mobile network. It is also said that Amazon is looking for a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO), currently.

The Kindle has only been available to US shoppers, till now. A spokesman for Amazon said: “We have previously announced that we are looking to release the Kindle with our international customers. At the moment we have no timeline.”
