Amazon has announced plans to hire more than 70,000 full-time workers for the for the holiday season.
The new jobs created will be based at the company’s fulfilment centres in the US to keep up with increased demand during the Christmas period.
Amazon.com currently has more than 20,000 full-time employees throughout its warehouses in the US. The company claims that, on average, seasonal employees earn 94% of its fulfilment centre employee starting wages and are eligible for healthcare benefits. Last year, Amazon kept on several seasonal employees and gave them permanent roles after the holiday season, which is something it expects to repeat this year.
Dave Clark, VP of worldwide operations and customer service at Amazon, commented on the hiring announcement: "So far this year, we have converted more than 7,000 temporary employees in the US into full-time, regular roles and we’re looking forward to converting thousands more after this holiday season.
"Each year, seasonal jobs lead to thousands of long-term, full-time roles in our sites – jobs that offer great pay, benefits starting on day one and the chance for employees to further their education through our Career Choice program."
Amazon has said that it will hire more than 1,500 season positions across its eight UK fulfilment centres and its Edinburgh customer service centre to meet high customer demand for the upcoming holiday season.
