Gartner’s latest Magic Quadrant for the IaaS sector has listed Amazon as the far-and-away industry leader.

The analyst firm says Amazon Web Services has "a very pure vision of highly automated, cost-effective IT capabilities, delivered in a flexible, on-demand manner," putting it head and shoulders ahead of nearest competitor CSC.

The two companies are the only cloud providers in the ‘leaders’ section of the quadrant, with Microsoft named the only visionary, while IBM, Fujitsu and HP are all in the ‘niche’ quartile – the lowest of the four.

Amazon tops the group in the quadrant’s two main criteria – ability to execute and completeness of vision.

CSC was praised because unlike other traditional data center outsourcers, CSC has fully embraced the highly standardized, highly automated cloud model, successfully blending the benefits of a true cloud service into an enterprise-ready offering."

Despite IBM’s poor positioning, Gartner thought highly of Softlayer, the computer giant’s latest acquisition.
