Amazon overhauls website ahead of its tablet launch

Expected to make Amazon's site easier to use and navigate on a tablet computer

By CBR Staff Writer

Amazon.com is set to overhaul its website as it prepares to offer a new $250 tablet device to rival Apple’s iPad.

The redesign is expected to make Amazon’s site easier to use and navigate on a tablet computer.

The new Amazon home page, which currently appears to be available to a fraction of web users, is less cluttered than the old one.

There will be fewer buttons, more white space and a bigger search box and the new site will also emphasise Amazon’s digital goods over its physical ones.

On the old site, a column of buttons leads users to electronic content and physical goods, such as toys, clothing and sporting gear.

According to reports, Amazon is expected to introduce a tablet computer in coming weeks, people familiar with the device have said.

The company believes more mobile devices in the hands of Amazon customers will lead to more impulse buying and increased regular purchases.

The device Amazon is developing sports a back-lit, 7-inch (17.8-cm) screen — smaller than the iPad’s and about the same as Research in Motion’s PlayBook, TechCrunch reported earlier.
