Amazon is planning to release a 6-inch tablet at a price of $50 in time for the holiday shopping season.
The price is half of the retailer’s existing 6-inch device, Fire tablet, which costs $99.
Citing people familiar with the matter, the Wall Street Journal reported that the device will feature a mono speaker instead of a stereo.
Several sources suggest that it will be targeted at low-end users who plan to have a tablet in the house in order to shop online.
The 6-inch tablet is only half an inch larger than Apple’s iPhone 6 Plus smartphone and smaller than several large-screen smartphones, dubbed phablets. It may not have phone capabilities.
The online retailer is also planning to release 8-inch and 10-inch screen tablets later this year.
Amazon’s comes in the middle of increased competition for tablets. Apple is reportedly working on new versions of its iPad and iPad Mini tablets.
Last year, Amazon unveiled a new lineup of tablets which included an exclusive kids’ edition and two low cost models.
It was reported last month that Amazon shelved some of its projects such as a 14-inch tablet, a projector device and a smart stylus.
