Amazon filed a patent in the US for smart glasses that suggests the web giant may make a foray into the augmented reality space.

The patent describes a head-mounted display (HMD) with two layers, one display layer and another with variable transparency.

The user would be able to control the transparency of the variable layer through a single touch, allowing them to control how much of the outside world they would see relative to what is being viewed on the screen.

According to the patent, the screen content would come from a tablet that would be coupled with the HMD.

The major application would be in when viewing video content outside the home, where some awareness of the viewer’s surroundings is required but some level of immersion is desired.
