Amazon expands to semiconductors with ARM-based chip for IoT

News: Amazon’s Annapurna Labs creates an ARM-based platform-on-chip and subsystems product line.

By CBR Staff Writer

Amazon’s Annapurna Labs has created an ARM-based platform-on-chip and subsystems product line, dubbed Alpine, for home gateways, Wi-Fi routers, and network attached storage (NAS) devices.

Alpine is claimed to offer high performance for UHD video streaming, secure storage, application virtualisation, Internet of Things (IoT), and cloud applications.

The company said various Alpine-based products from third party original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) were already available, but the product line had now been opened to other OEMs and service providers.

The Alpine platform works with several standard open source libraries and development models including data plane development kit, OpenWRT, and open source hypervisor and container frameworks.

It integrates thermal sensors, and parity/error correcting code on internal buses, external buses, and memory.

Annapurna Labs is also providing a hardware development kit (HDK) for Alpine-based designs, which comprise schematics files, layout files, thermal guidelines, and a bill of material.

The HDK allows OEMs to use their own in-house resources, contract manufacturers, or other original device manufacturers.
