Kindle

Amazon reports that for every 100 print books it sold, it has sold 114 Kindle books.

UK readers are also buying four times the amount of books they did before owning a Kindle. The UK has also seen more than a 400% increase in independent UK authors and publishers using Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) to share their books with Kindle readers.

"Customers in the UK are now choosing Kindle books more often than print books, even as our print business continues to grow." said Jorrit Van der Meulen, vice president of Kindle EU. "We hit this milestone in the US less than four years after introducing Kindle, so to reach this landmark after just two years in the UK is remarkable and shows how quickly UK readers are embracing Kindle."

The Kindle has been growing in popularity since Amazon introduced it in 2010. By mid 2011, Kindle had passed hardcover book sales at a rate of more than 2 to 1.

"As a result of the success of Kindle, we’re selling more books than ever before on behalf of authors and publishers," said Meulen."Thanks to Kindle Direct Publishing, thousands of self-published authors have also been given an outlet to share their work with the millions of Kindle readers worldwide."

A basic Kindle reader cost £89 in the UK and allows readers the "added convenience of downloading their books in just 60 seconds, anytime, anywhere."

Free Kindle reading applications are also available on devices such as iPad, iPhone, Mac and Android-based devices.
