Amazon is expanding its UK fulfilment centre network with a new warehouse in Tilbury, Essex, which will be opened in spring 2017.
It will be the company’s thirteenth fulfilment centre in the UK. The warehouse will create 1,500 new jobs, a large chunk of the 3,500 new jobs Amazon expects to create in the country this year.
The warehouse will be incorporated with advanced Amazon Robotics technology. The company said the robots slide under a tower of shelves where products are stowed, lift it and move it through the fulfilment centre.
Robots will move the shelves to employees in order to accelerate order processing time and reduce walking time.
Earlier this year, Amazon launched the robotics technology at its fulfilment centres in Dunstable and Doncaster.
Amazon vice president of UK operations John Tagawa said: “The Amazon teams are dedicated to innovating in our fulfilment centres to increase speed of delivery while enabling greater selection at lower costs for our customers.
“The introduction of Amazon Robotics is the newest example of our commitment to invention in logistics on behalf of our employees and our customers.”
Since 2010, Amazon has invested £4.6bn in the UK economy to help build and run its business in the country.
Amazon will open a new London office in 2017 giving total capacity for 5,000 people.
Amazon UK head Doug Gurr said Britain's vote to exit the EU did not affect its investment plans for the country.
Last month, the company announced a partnership with the UK Government to explore the steps needed to make the delivery of parcels by small drones a reality.
The move will allow the company to trial new methods of testing its delivery systems.
