Amazon has had security authorisation from the US Department of Defense (DoD) for four of its cloud computing infrastructures.
It means the firm has met the Pentagon’s ‘stringent security and compliance requirements’, paving the way for more military agencies to use its cloud services.
The latest approval comes after the successful completion of earlier security tests carried out through the government-wide Federal Risk and Authorization Management Program (FedRAMP), in addition to assessment of further defence-specific protections.
Amazon Web Services Worldwide Public Sector VP Teresa Carlson said that currently more than 600 government agencies use AWS services.
"After receiving an overwhelming response from defense agencies interested in leveraging our FedRAMP Authority to Operate (ATO), we’re very excited to further extend our services to the government community by meeting the additional requirements of the DoD," Carlson added.
As part of the approval tests, the Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA) validated the company’s compliance with additional security controls and approved AWS cloud computing services.
Some DoD agencies, including the US Navy and Air Force, already use the Amazon cloud services, while the latest approval would facilitate other agencies to evaluate and authorise its use.
