Amazon has acquired the US-based video game developer Double Helix Games for an undisclosed sum.
Following the move, the online shopping company is reportedly planning to enter the game console segment in 2014 with the launch of a new gaming console.
TechCrunch cited Amazon statement saying, "Amazon has acquired Double Helix as part of our ongoing commitment to build innovative games for customers."
Double Helix Games was established in 2007 with the merger of two Foundation 9 studios, The Collective and Shiny Entertainment, and has about 75 employees.
Amazon’s gaming console is reported to be running on Android and allows users to stream as well as downloaded games.
According to the reports from VG247, Amazon has been showing publishers popular Android and iOS games as demos for a console that is expected to be launched for about $300.
