An outage triggered by technical problems at Amazon’s web service centres has hit users of the movie rental firm Netflix’s streaming video service on Christmas Eve.

It was resolved Tuesday morning.

Subscribers of the firm across Canada, Latin America and the US were hit by the outage, and devices that allow users to stream movies and television shows from home were also affected.

Amazon spokeswoman Tera Randall said: "The service is now functioning correctly, and we’re heads down making sure customers are operating smoothly."

Netflix spokesman Joris Evers said that the firm has been investigating exactly what happened and how it could have been prevented.

"We are happy that people opening gifts of Netflix or Netflix capable devices can watch TV shows and movies and apologize for any inconvenience caused last night," he added.

According to Netflix more than 27 million of its 30 million live in the Americas region which was affteced by the outage and could have potentially been affected, Evers said.
