Altiris updates virtual server controls

Systems and security software vendor Altiris Inc is about to update its remote server management suite so it will be capable of distributing software upgrades to virtual server machines.

By CBR Staff Writer

Version 6.2 of the Salt Lake City, Utah-based vendor’s Altiris Server Management Suite due this month will include new features that will allow administrators to manage inventories of virtual VMware ESX servers. Future editions will bring the same capabilities to the management of Xen and Microsoft virtual machine environments.

Altiris has also announced that it will be bringing systems to the market that will help automate parts of the migration effort in deploying Windows Vista, and the 2007 edition of Microsoft Office. It will automate the process of migrating user settings and data to new PCs running Windows Vista.

Last month Dell revealed it was buying up to 1.5 million shares in Altiris, as part of an agreement between the two companies to jointly develop systems management software.
