Looks like the San Francisco Chronicle jumped the gun (CI No 3,462). Contrary to the Chron’s report, Compaq Computer Corp says it has not yet signed an agreement with AltaVista Technologies Inc to take over the altavista.com domain name. However both companies say they have reached an agreement in principle. The rival trademarks have been causing confusion for years. Wired News reports that at one stage, Digital Equipment Corp (since acquired by Compaq) sent out an automatic agent to sites that pointed to altavista.com, asking webmasters to check whether they had linked to the wrong AltaVista.
