The Allseen Alliance has taken steps to advance its standard for the internet of things (IoT) after unveiling a network gateway agent at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.
Led by the Linux Foundation, the one-year-old alliance is working on an IoT standard based on Qualcomm’s AllJoyn open-source code, which members can use in their products for free.
Alljoyn is designed to allow apps or services to interact with multiple IoT devices, such as lights, heating systems, security cameras and wearables.
The AllJoyn Gateway Agent will enable users to connect to and manage their AllJoyn-enabled smart devices from external networks and cloud-based services, according to the alliance.
Art Lancaster, CTO of Affinegy and chair of the AllSeen Alliance Gateway Working Group, said: "There are millions of connected devices on the market and that number is growing exponentially.
"The AllSeen Alliance believes that consumers should have control over these devices and their data — with the assurance that these connections are both private and secure. The AllJoyn Gateway Agent is the industry’s first standard way to connect IoT devices and applications with such confidence."
Allseen, which includes big names like LG, Sharp, Panasonic and Cisco, added that users will be able to install the gateway on Linux or OpenWRT based WiFi routers, automation hubs and other devices to provide connectivity.
