Web application server and development tools firm Allaire Corp has boosted its Java capabilities, announcing Tuesday that it has struck a deal to acquire Live Software Inc for about $24m in stock. San Francisco-based Live is billed as a pioneer in server- side Java development and deployment technology and is the developer of the JRun engine, which claims about 80,000 developers worldwide.
Allaire, based in Cambridge, Massachusetts, will hand over 550,000 shares of its common stock to cover the purchase, valuing the deal at $24.2m based on Monday’s closing price of $44.063. The transaction will be accounted for as a pooling of interests although no expected closing date was given.
Allaire says it plans to continue to sell JRun as a standalone product but will also add support for JSP and Java servlet development to a future release of its web IDE, HomeSite. In addition, it intends to incorporate JRun technology into the ColdFusion web application server. The Live team will move to Allaire’s headquarters in Cambridge, with Live CEO Paul Colton serving as vice president and general manager of JRun.
