The Maidenhead, UK based company was set up in June 2005 by John Newton, co-founder of Documentum Inc, and John Powell, former COO of Business Objects SA, and was seeded with $2m in funding by Accel Partners.

Accel has also co-led the second funding round with Mayfield Fund, with Mayfield’s managing director, Robin Vasan, joining Accel managing general partner, Kevin Comolli, on Alfresco’s board of directors.

Both Accel and Mayfield have a history of investing in open source software vendors, with Accel having invested in open source middleware vendor JBoss Inc, open source messaging vendor Zimbra Inc, and open source virtualization firm XenSource Inc, while Mayfield has invested in systems management vendor Goundwork Open Source Inc.

Alfresco has already signed up some large-scale customers for its enterprise-scale content repository and portal framework, including information provider Informa Plc and recruitment firm Reed Managed Services Plc.
