Aldi’s tablet sells out

The Lifetab has run out of stock on its first weekend on sale.

By Joe Curtis

Supermarket chain Aldi’s low-cost tablet has already sold out after going on sale on the weekend.

The Medion Lifetab is the latest in a line of cheaper tablets released in the run up to Christmas and is priced just under £80, while Tesco’s £119 Hudl has sold 300,000 units since hitting stores in September.

Both are 7-inch screen devices based on an Android OS, and are competing against each other as well as Argos’s £99 MyTablet.

The tablets also face competition from more established, and pricey, tablets like Google’s Nexus 7 and the iPad Mini, while Asus entered the space with new eight and ten-inch tablets costing £200.

Aldi’s Lifetab boasts 8GB of built-in memory, and a 1.6GHz quad-core processor, similar specs to the Tesco and Argos tablets, as the rival brands all look to increase their market share in the personal device space over Christmas.

IDC estimates that 25% of tablets shipped to the UK between July and September cost below £120, a price range it expects to grow.
