The Cegelec CGA unit of Alcatel Alsthom SA reports that the UK Ministry of Transport is examining its Smart Card-based system for collecting motorway tolls: its Hamlet 2 system involves a Smart Card placed in the vehicle, which sends a signal to a receiver via a transponder and provides information on the credit balance of the driver before deducting the amount needed to cover the distance travelled.
