Alcatel secured the number one position in the Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) modem market shipping nearly twice as many units as its nearest competitor in the fourth quarter 2000, according to a newly released report by Dell’Oro Group, a leading industry research firm.
For the fourth quarter of 2000 Alcatel shipped 636,800 DSL modems, achieving a 34.9% share of the worldwide DSL modem market according to Dell’Oro estimates, while its next nearest competitor followed with an 18.6% share. On the revenue side, Alcatel again led all competitors with a 36.3% market share.
Alcatel’s strong fourth quarter performance also helped the company maintain the number one position for all of 2000 in both unit sales (25.2%, or 1.6 million units) and revenue (26.2%). This is the third year in a row that Alcatel has achieved this leadership position in the worldwide DSL modem market.
Marc Hermans, president of Alcatel’s DSL Consumer Products Activities, said in a press release, Alcatel’s leadership position is helping fuel the explosion in broadband access as more and more users experience the rich content and convenience of always-on high-speed Internet.
