ALCATEL STARTS RUSSIA’s FIRST GSM NETWORK

By CBR Staff Writer

A number of inhabitants of Nizhny Novgorod in Russia have now received hand sets and cards to become Russia’s first-ever users of a Groupe Speciale Mobile digital cellular mobile telephone system, Alcatel NV reports. The network’s mobile switching centre, based on the Alcatel 1000 S12 digital switch and base stations, is designed to support 2,000 subscribers initially. Full commercial deployment of the network for the city’s population of around 1.4m is scheduled for the second half of this year.
