ALCATEL-SEL TO SHED 5,300, SHUT PLANTS, SEES BIG LOSS

Alcatel-SEL AG, the big German subsidiary of Alcatel NV, is indeed in deep trouble. The company announced yesterday that it is to cut 5,300 jobs this year and next- up from 3,500 previously suggested, will close its plants at Mannheim and Rochlitz and expects an operating loss of some $200m this year; and it will not see any profit before 1996.
