Kilkenny is using Alcatel’s OmniPCX telephone system to connect 300 users across 21 council sites, nine of which are using IP phones. All users have access to the same services such as voicemail, irrespective of location, while the system is managed centrally using Alcatel’s OmniVista 4760 network management platform.

Previously, the county and borough councils had been using numerous separate legacy phone systems that were problematic to operate and maintain. As the local authorities already had a future-proof data network, the decision was made to implement and install a new phone system that could connect multiple council sites, including the city and county halls, library HQ and fire station with VoIP.

The council says that, by moving to a VoIP system, it will eliminate costs and increase interaction and collaboration between sites.

Graeme Allan, VP for Alcatel enterprise activities in Northern Europe commented, Kilkenny will now be able to improve both internal efficiency as well as its provision of services to the community as a whole.
