ALCATEL PLANS JOB CUTS IN BID TO RETURN TO PROFIT

Blaming near-completion (at last) of digitization of the German telephone network, Alcatel SEL AG, Stuttgart says it must cut 1,500 jobs in 1997, after cutting the same number last year, in an effort to return to profits this year.
