ALCATEL OPENS PLANT NEAR STRASSBOURG

Alcatel NV has opened a new plant to manufacture business speech and data communications systems at Illkirch Graffenstaden, near Strasbourg, just inside France on the West German border: the new plant will bring together 1,855 people from 15 Telic Alcatel locations in France, and will produce the high-capacity Telic 2600 digital PABX, the compact Telic 1600, PABX terminals, ISDN terminals, facsimile machines, graphic analysers and telephone subsets; the Strasbourg factory that is closing was responsible for development of the Minitel; Telic Alcatel employs 14,880 people in 60 countries and turnover is running at some $1,500m a year.
