ALCATEL NEARER TO A DEAL WITH SOVIET UNION …

And the Alcatel Bell Belgian end of Alcatel NV reckons that the company is closer to sealing the vast deal it has been negotiating with the Soviet Union on the System 12 digital exchange, and that decisions in last week’s CoCom meeting had eased the barriers: the company reckons that the value of sales under the proposed agreements, including exchanges to be built in the Soviet Union, would be as much as $1,200m.
