Telekom Malaysia Bhd, the listed state-controlled phone company, has has awarded Alcatel NV a telephone switching contract worth $200m for 850,000 lines of digital exchanges, Reuter reports from Kuala Lumpur: the project is part of an $800m telephone switching contract Telekom is negotiating with several foreign firms, including Nokia Oy, Finland and Fujitsu Ltd of Japan; manufacture will be in France and assembly at a new Alcatel Network Systems Malaysia Sdn Bhd joint venture in which Alcatel holds 51%.
