Alcatel Alsthom SA’s Alcatel CIT telecommunications equipment maker must shed 1,600 of its 9,400 employees by the end of next year as captive orders from France Telecom dry up in the wake of telecommunications deregulation. It sees an operating loss of $100m this year.
