The St Petersburg-based Alcatel NV joint venture Alcatel BSR has announced that it generated business worth $4.8m in 1992.However the figure includes two large contracts signed at the end of 1992, one of which may now be in serious doubt. The first is to install a telecommunications network at the marine trade port in St Petersburg, valued at $1.74m, and the other, worth $1.27m, is to install a large switch at the Kamaz automobile plant in Tatarstan. However a serious fire occurred on one of the main production lines at the Kamaz auto plant in April causing millions of dollars worth of damage. There has so far been no word from Kamaz what the effect will be on its existing contracts. Alcatel BSR also recently opened a training centre in Moscow at the Moscow Engineering University for Communication & Information Technology, MTUSI. The project is called the Russian-Belgian Mosbell training centre.
