ALCATEL ANNOUNCES NEW CELLULAR PHONE NETWORK

By CBR Staff Writer

Alcatel Alsthom SA has announced a satellite cellular telephone network called SkyBridge, which sounds most like the original, proposed by Motorola Inc, because it will have 64 low earth orbit satellites when it is complete. The company says it plans to raise $3.5bn in financing via debt and equity placings. The SkyBridge system is intended to be operational in 2001 and will provide high-speed broadband interactive services to business and residential users around the world.
