Alcatel Alsthom SA says it sold about $1,000m of telecommunications equipment to China in 1993 and expects sales to match that level this year: it claims a dominant 40% share of the Chinese market for public telephone exchanges and is rapidly expanding production capacity in Shanghai’s Pudong district, where it currently assembles some 2m lines of digital switch annually, planned to rise to 4m next year and ultimately 6m.
