Filling out its PowerHub range of local area networking switching hubs, San Jose, California-based Alantec Corp has announced the model 4000, pitching it at the small workgroup segment of the market. The product – essentially a cut-down version of the 6000 announced in May (CI No 2,662 ) – comes in five fixed configurations, each with 12 Ethernet ports, and either two Fast Ethernet ports or one FDDI DAS connection. Different models are available for twisted pair, fibre or combination connections. As with the other PowerHub models, it is said to feature both multilayer and multiprotocol switching – a facility Alantec claims as unique. The 4000 is due to ship in 60 days, with the FDDI option expected in September, and it starts at $6,950.
