AIR-TO-GROUND TELEPHONE LAUNCH FROM MERCURY

Mercury Communications Ltd announced yesterday that it is to launch a commercial digital air-to-ground telephone operation, aiming to roll out an initial service in December: Mercury will provide the service via In-Flight Phone Europe, an Ireland-based joint venture between Mercury, Goeken Group Inc’s In-Flight Phone International and investment firm Irelandia; Mercury will hold 49%, with In-Flight holding 30%, Irelandia the balance; the new company aims to have a network of 60 earth stations to give complete European coverage by 1995.
