That drive is dubbed a 3390-3.5 by the humourists, and next up, IBM Corp – or its AdStar unit – is expected to try to stop EMC Corp dead in the water with an array that will essentially be more cache than disk, will implement logical 3390 architecture but is expected to offer fewer features than the Symmetrix; it will be a direct attach device not needing the 3990 controller, and could ship in the fourth quarter, also at about $5 per Megabyte, using the 3.5 disk.
