Facebook rolls out augmented reality selfie ‘masks’ in time for Halloween

Users can transform into a skeleton, witch or pumpkin with the new AR feature.

Facebook launches selfie lenses for its live video feature, called ‘Masks.’ Facebook users will be able to create masks in time for Halloween, as the social media company has integrated its augmented reality selfie lenses into its main app.

The feature, which is only currently available to some users of the network, allows people to start using the special effects when they go live.

Facebook’s masks can be added to video by simply tapping the magic wand button and making a selection from the creative tools tray.

With this feature, the company hopes to attract more users to Live. Users in the U.S., UK and New Zealand are now able to begin using the feature.

facebookA Facebook spokesperson said: “If you’re looking to share moments in real time with added flair, you will soon be able to go live on Facebook wearing a mask. We have a number of festive masks for Halloween, including a skull, an evil queen and two limited-edition masks: a pumpkin and a witch. A selection of masks will continue to be available after Halloween, so you can be creative in your Live videos any time!”

Facebook is already a hub for videos with about 100 million videos being watched every day. This move could take Facebook one step closer to earning revenue from videos.

Facebook has previously signed deals with several media companies and celebrities to create video content for the live video-streaming service.

The Wall Street Journal said that, Facebook has signed deals with over 140 media companies and celebrities for an amount totalling $50m.

The report said the move is to create a revenue source from its live streaming service as well as create more attractive video content for its users.
