African body to manage IP addresses

AfriNIC was on Friday approved to manage IP address allocation by the Internet Corp for Assigned Names and Numbers, taking over the responsibility from RIPE NCC, which continues to manage address space in Europe.

During an emotional ICANN board meeting here in Mar Del Plata, Argentina, ICANN chairman Vint Cerf shed a tear and said, over the sound of a standing ovation: It means so much to see two years of hard work come to fruition.

ICANN director Mouhamet Diop, from Senegal, said AfriNIC, the fifth Regional Internet Registry, becomes the only unique institution that is working for the internet for the whole continent in the interests of the whole continent.
