Santa Clara, California-based Advanced Telecommunications Modules Inc claims its new development suite will speed up development of modems and adapters able to use both asynchronous transfer mode and DSL digital subscriber line technology. The company says its integrated asynchronous application specific processor and software package enables high bandwidth, end-to-end asynchronous systems to link to DSL networks that use the existing copper telephone wire. By combine asynchronous and digital subscriber line technologies, carriers are hoping to boost the speed and useful life of existing copper-based local loops. ATM Inc has already licensed the chip to communications hardware suppliers Broadband Technologies, Next Level Communications, SMC and Westell Technologies. The company, an Olivetti spin-off, charges a one-time licensing fee to suppliers of $175,000.
