In an effort to prevent Motorola stealing all the limelight in the RISC market with its 88000 this week, Advanced Micro Devices Inc chipped in with the announcement that it had formed a new Streamlined Instruction Processors directorate in Austin, Texas, dedicated to its AM29000 32-bit RISC-based microprocessor and its related family of development support products. Formal introduction of the Am29000 is set for this quarter, and AMD reckons that the 32-bit CMOS part, rated at 17 MIPS, is three to five times faster than any current-generation 32-bit device at lower systems cost. The Motorola 88000 will be available towards year-end.
