Advanced Micro Devices Inc, Sunnyvale, California is to get $55m from Sony USA Inc and will receive manufacturing technology for integrated circuits from the Japanese company under an agreement where Sony will establish an advanced submicron wafer fabrication operation in a currently idle part of AMD’s chip plant in San Antonio, Texas. To accomplish the technology transfer, AMD will assign engineers to the operation and they will gain access to Sony’s manufacturing processes for advanced VLSI CMOS, during a period of collaboration to last through 1994. Later collaboration on developing CMOS process technology aimed at the 0.5-micron level is also in the plan.
