Advanced Micro Devices Inc, which has won a agreement from Microsoft Corp for it to use Microsoft’s Windows-Compatible logo on its Am386 and Am486DX microprocessor packaging, advertising and collateral marketing materials, has announced two new members of the Am486 family: a 40MHz 486DX CPU incorporating power management features for energy-efficient personal computers, and a clock-doubled 48DX2-66 device. The 40MHz Am486DXL microprocessor, with System Management Mode operation, is targeted at the emerging politically correct green desktop and notebook markets, at no price premium over standard 33MHz devices. Designers have the alternative of maintaining 33MHz performance while eliminating the second-level cache common in most 33MHz 80486 machines, to reduce the typical system’s power consumption, board space and cost. The Am486 parts are pin-compatible alternatives for Intel Corp’s equivalent parts. Ships begin this quarter and the Am486DXL is $283 for 1,000-up, while the Am486DX2-66 device, is $463 for 1,000-up in pin grid array packages.
