Advanced Micro Devices Inc duly showed off its reverse engineered 80386 chip at Comdex/Fall on Monday, demonstrating it operating in a Compaq Computer Corp machine – no doubt in the hope that Compaq, which has long made it clear it does not like being dependent on a chip for which there is no second source, will be a major customer: Advanced Micro gave no price or delivery date for the chip, but analysts reckon that it could garner 10% of the $950m market for 80386 chips in 1991 if all goes well.
