Advanced Micro Devices Inc is this week expected to announce immediate shipments of its very late K5 microprocessor at bargain-basement prices, says US PC Week. Renamed the 5K86, the part will come in 90MHz and 75MHz versions, the former at $99 for 1,000-up where Intel Corp charges $198, and the latter $75 compared with Intel’s $104. The Sunnyvale company expects to ship 5m during the first 12 months. The 5K86 chips are designed to be compatible with Intel core logic chip sets and motherboards. A 100MHz version is planned for the third quarter, an enhanced 120MHz in the fourth.
